Last night, right before sending out a batch of client proposals, we ran a live QA pass on our data sanitation sandbox. What we caught in 30 seconds is the exact reason why so many internal company dashboards silently report wrong revenue numbers.

Look at this seemingly innocent row from a standard e-commerce export:

ORD-1001, John Doe , 10/12/2026 , "$2,450.00" , JOHN.DOE@GMAIL.COM , Completed

If an engineer—or an LLM—writes a naive line.split(",") parser, that single thousand-separator comma inside "$2,450.00" shatters the entire row alignment:

  • amount becomes $2
  • email becomes 450.00
  • status becomes JOHN.DOE@GMAIL.COM

Even worse, if another row contains a human-readable date like "Oct 15, 2026", the year 2026 slides straight into the amount column. No exception is thrown. Your database quietly ingests garbage.

The 3 Rules of Production-Grade Data Sanitation

When business teams ask for "AI Data Cleaning," many routine normalization and validation tasks can be handled deterministically without an LLM. Sending large tabular datasets to a cloud LLM may add cost, variability, and data-handling considerations; evaluate the actual task and approved data flow before choosing an approach.

Instead, a reliable ETL microservice relies on three deterministic layers:

1. State-Machine RFC-4180 Tokenization

Never split on raw delimiters. Whether in Python (csv.DictReader(skipinitialspace=True)) or in a zero-latency browser sandbox, parsing must track quote state (inQuotes = !inQuotes) before evaluating field boundaries, then strip enclosing quotes cleanly.

2. Context-Aware Date & Currency Normalization

  • Currency fields: Strip [\$€£, ] only after tokenizing the quoted field, casting "$2,450.00" cleanly into 2450.0.
  • Ambiguous dates: Distinguish MM/DD/YYYY from DD/MM/YYYY (when day > 12, such as 16/10/2026) and text dates (Oct 15, 2026), normalizing every record into strict ISO-8601 (YYYY-MM-DD).

3. Cell-Level Anomaly Audit Logging

Never mutate business data silently. Every transformation should emit a structured audit entry:

  • Row 1 [order_date]: date_format_normalized ("10/12/2026" → "2026-10-12")
  • Row 1 [amount]: currency_symbols_removed ("$2,450.00" → "2450")
  • Row 2 [_row_]: duplicate_dropped

Try the Live Sandbox (Or Upload Your Own Dirty CSV)

We built and open-sourced a dual-mode FastAPI AI Micro-Tools Kit that combines this exact deterministic CSV cleaner with Pydantic v2 document extraction and support ticket triage. You can test it right now in your browser—and even upload your own .csv or .pdf files locally with zero server round-trips:
